Bog rata Ragnarök, 2022's most lavishly produced parenting guide, is out now for PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4. It's largely a natural sequel to its 2018 predecessor.God of war, right down to the way certain gameplay mechanics work (heartfelt condolences to anyone who hated those damn Nornir chests). ButRagnarökhe has his tricks, and he certainly doesn't explain them all.
Whether you're a seasoned pro or coming in colder than Niflheim, the following advice should help guide protagonist Kratos and his son, Atreus, through the nine kingdoms.
You - yes, you -definitelyI need a refresher.
From the main menu, you can access a two-minute lore summary video showing key moments from the game in 2018. Don't even bother watching it.The clip is unclear and selectively edited, and honestly ended up leaving me more confused than I was before watching- and from someone who repeated itGod of war(2018) a month beforeRagnarökedition. The clip also doesn't even mention the original trilogy, whose events are discussed much more oftenRagnarökthan in its predecessor.
If you need a refresher on all the important beats in the God of War story so far, check out our knowledge guide, which covers not only the four main games, but also important events from the spinoffs.
You can come back for it. Probably.
Like the previous game,Bog rata Ragnarökit's a bit Metroidvania. You'll often see an environmental indicator—a glowing crack in a wall, say, or a patch of red blackberry—and know in your heart that's the way, but you don't have the equipment to make progress. Don't waste time trying to brute force a solution. For almost every one of these cases, you will have the opportunity to return -aftereventually you unlock the necessary equipment.
When you hit an object you can't pass, Mimir—a severed head brought to life for the express purpose of making a constant wise crack—will sometimes tell you so directly. ("We don't have the magic for that right now, brother.") Atreus, meanwhile, might offer advice on how to solve the puzzle. ("We've got to find a way to lower the bridge, Father.") If you're lost or stuck, listen to your travel companions.
Atreus is leading you on the right path, but don't follow him just yet.
Bog rata Ragnarökin accordance with game design Law of Forked Roads: When Atreus goes left towards the story mission, it meansthere is a collectible to your right.
Entering a mystical door heals you
Whenever you enter amystical door—Bog rata Ragnarökgo on a fast trip — you'll come out with full health and rage gauges. Also, if you die, you'll respawn at full health a few steps before the battle that killed you. In some cases, especially during some of the longer fights, there's a strategic reason to purposefully ditch the fight at the start so you can try again with a full health bar.
Every side quest is worth it.
Bog rata RagnarökThe main missions are called The Path and are marked with a bright orange icon. You cannot turn off this indicator on the compass (which, by the way, you will get only after a few hours of the game). Side missions, called Favors, are marked with dark blue icons. You can track one by one on the compass by opening the menu and going toMagazinetab, hover over the service you want to track, then press Triangle.

To be clear, some services can only be properly described as mission fetches. For every captivating mission that fleshes out the characters and fundamentally alters the game world, there are three more ofinding six fimbulwhatevers. Boring or not, they're all worth doing; completing services will give you rare rewards, sometimes even new weapons. Plus, the targets for multiple tasks will often be in the same vicinity, so you can drop the fetch task while you work on the one that's actually interesting.
You can (and should) get both shields.
Initially, you will be able to choose between two shields:Fearless shieldiStone wall shield. Fearless Shield significantly improves Kratos' parry. The Stonewall Shield, meanwhile, is virtually impenetrable and comes with a powerful shield bashing attack. TimeRagnarökframes this choice, you'd think it was like choosing a starter Pokémon. Not so; you'll soon accumulate enough resources to buy any shield you don't choose. Try one, then another. (Various shields will also continue to appear throughout the game.)
You should keep your equipment for the entire game.
God of war(2018) featured a pretty standard gear loop: get gear, use it until it's weak (or bored), then sell it for a fraction of what you paid for it.Bog rata RagnarökThe system, however, is a bit more complex. Each set of armor should stay with you throughout the game. They're all supposed to be equal in power, in theory, and the idea is to find a set you like - whether it's the specific characteristics it improves or the unique perks it gives - and upgrade it as you go.
Artifacts, however, are intended for sale.
There is no need to keep the collectibles you find in the nine kingdoms.Artifacts you have collectedit will still count for any collectibles you separate, and the few that are legitimately mission critical will be marked with a blue side mission icon. You can also sell everything at once by tabbing to the Artifacts page of any store and then holding down the Triangle button.
Take the blue fruit.
Look at this?
:no_upscale()/cdn.vox-cdn.com/uploads/chorus_asset/file/24179259/god_of_war_ragnarok_yggdrasil_dew.jpg)
Don't miss the Yggdrasil Dew hanging from the trees. You'll get a permanent stat boost for every drop you find. (They only appear when rowing a boatRagnarökwaterways in regions like Svartalfheim.)
The accessibility settings are ridiculously broad.
Bog rata Ragnarökit probably has the most robust settings menu of any modern video game. One allows you to direct Kratos towards the main story objective by pressing the joystick. The second changes the input of the "dodge" and "interact" buttons. (Come on, everyone knows the dodge spot is on the Circle!) The third one makes it so you automatically pick up health and money. It's theremanyreview, so check out our full listall settings you should turn on from day one.
Any settings you have changed from the defaults will be highlighted in blue text.
Nornir chest rewards rotate.
Opening Nornir chests— environmental puzzles that require you to find and usually break three ancient structures imprinted with Norse runes — is the most effective way to raise Kratos' stats. Some give youThin apple, increasing your total health once you find a few. Others give you aHorn of bloody mead, which does the same to your rage meter. The prizes are not random, nor are they predetermined. They alternate with each Nornir chest you open. It's the game's way of making sure Kratos stays as healthy as he is full of rage.
Enemy weight is color coded.
Here's a simple trick to find out how tough an enemy is: look at the health bar. Enemies lower than your level havezelenahealth bars, enemies at or around the same level as youorangeones, while enemies that outnumber you havepurplebars. Everything exceptand? Yep, better reload the latest autosave while you have a chance.
Gold skills can be leveled up.
The more often you perform a combat skill, the higher it will be ranked: from bronze to silver to, finally, gold. After skilling up to gold, you can spend 1000 XP to apply an enhancement —formally called mod token— which increases damage, stun, freeze or burn, and so on. In the skill tree, if the icon is gold, it means it is eligible for an upgrade. Also, once you've unlocked a skill buff, you can replace it with another bonus at any time. No need to repeatedly spend 1000 XP on new perks whenever you want to change them.
